A place for both order and chaos

A place for both order and chaos

Shelves for the naturally orderly or the deliberately disorderly

Our shelf design started from something primitive: a wooden kitchen shelf, the kind built for spice jars or a spoon rack, recognisably Shaker in spirit.

From there, we simply blew it up in scale, turning a single shelf into a set of shelves to mount on a wall.

At a larger scale again, with sturdier sections of timber, the shelves are built for books, wherever they happen to live: in a hallway, a bedroom corner, above a desk or beside a loo.

Despite their practical and substantial form, there’s a lightness to them and something slightly whimsical in their character.

The shelves can be assembled with matching or assorted brackets. The brackets represent order in more ways than one. Each profile is borrowed from an architectural order: ‘hollow’ from a primitive dresser, ‘cusp’ from a Gothic window, ‘corbel’ from the classical style of the Renaissance, ‘quirk’ from Art Deco and ‘beak’ from the blunt confidence of the 1980s.

"I like that the shelves are so open and clean that there’s nowhere to hide in the making. And that when you’re doing something that repeats, you have to be meticulous otherwise the eye picks up any inconsistency."

Greg Stone, creative development lead

Repeat one bracket style from top to bottom and side to side and the shelves are naturally orderly. Mix the orders and they become deliberately disorderly.

In the end, it’s a democratic approach. We want people to be able to have our pieces because we’re utilitarian at heart, but we also want people to feel joy.

Arrange them with care, clutter them with love. Both are entirely in order.
