Making

Every piece is made by hand in our Stamford workshops. We work in solid wood, forged and cast metal, and occasionally found or reclaimed materials, all chosen for their character and their capacity to age well.

We look carefully at how things were made in the past, not to copy them, but to understand what gave them longevity. The construction methods, joinery details and finishing processes we use are chosen because they work, and because they result in furniture and lighting that improve with time and use.

Once a commission is confirmed, a dedicated group of makers and finishers takes the piece from initial drawing through construction and finishing, with quality considered at every stage. No two projects are identical, which means everyone in the workshop must be ready to adapt, and they do.

Ours is a workshop with a genuine culture of learning. More experienced makers pass skills to the next generation, and the next generation consistently surprises them in return. That exchange is part of what we make, as much as the objects themselves.

Finishing is where a piece comes into its own. We have developed a library of finishes for timber, brass, iron and stone, each made and tested in-house. They are chosen to age authentically, deepening and developing over time. Every piece can be completely refinished at any point in its life.

Sharing knowledge is vital and apprentices are encouraged
to contribute their ideas from the start. Regular toobox talks are
guaranteed to cause a lively debate.
